Small Groups have been at the heart of Methodism since the days of John Wesley.
At New Hanover, Small Groups are about building authentic relationships, sharing life’s joys and struggles, holding each other accountable, growing in faith, and doing ministry together. Small Groups usually include about twelve people and meet for 90 minutes each week at church or in a group member’s home.
We have a wide variety of groups, meeting times, and locations, convenient for just about any schedule, life chapter, and stage of faith. If you desire to seek and understand God's wisdom and are open to growing in Christ, we have a group for you.
We encourage Small Groups sign-ups in the fall and at the beginning of Lent, during our annual church-wide Spiritual Growth Campaign, but many of our Small Groups meet year-round, and those interested are welcome to join at any time.
"My Small Group has offered me the opportunity to be myself, to share my worries and fears with women who are in the same boat, and to feel completely accepted. When I am with my Small Group, it is almost as if life is on pause, and we have an hour or so to just be together and to confirm that we are not alone in our struggles. Nothing else matters for that hour." – Anne Yost
"For me, joining a Small Group, especially the one I am currently in, has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. First and foremost, it has definitely helped me grow spiritually through the various studies we have used. Each study we chose had so much to offer to help all of us move forward in our faith journey; however, without the support and fellowship of the others in my group, I know I would not be where I am today. I feel so blessed to have this group of caring, compassionate, and faithful ladies to walk with in faith and especially to call my friend." – Lori Ludy
"Since attending Small Groups I have learned how to truly care for others. I have so much in common with several of the men in my group and we have formed a friendship that I am sure will last a lifetime. I recommend joining a Small Group today. The experience will change your life." – John Major
"My wife, Amy and I have been involved in Small Group ministries for over 25 years. We have found that sharing our life with others on a regular basis through the Small Group ministry creates opportunities for deeper relationships with others and inspires us to grow closer to our Lord Jesus Christ. When challenges in life come, it really makes a difference to have the support of other families from the group to provide spiritual, practical and emotional help to get through." – Greg Scott
Disciple is an in-depth 34-week study of the Bible, offered every year beginning in the fall. This study is a significant commitment – a daily half-hour of Bible reading and a weekly two-hour classroom session – and the rewards are everlasting.
Each class includes a short video featuring a Biblical scholar’s perspective on the week’s reading, followed by group discussion.
At the end of 34 weeks, students will have developed a knowledge and understanding of 70% of the Bible. Additionally, Disciple groups form strong bonds of fellowship between compassionate, Christian friends. Many of our current long-term Small Groups originated during an initial Disciple class.
As part of Small Groups Ministries at New Hanover, adults can also take part in Bible study during regular Sunday school classes held during all three Sunday morning services. Various topics are covered, from sermon discussion to ongoing short-term studies to our annual church-wide Spiritual Campaign.
