Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is your belief in Holy Communion?
We believe that Jesus Christ meets us when we receive the Lord's Supper in faith. Our communion table is open to everyone who loves Christ, confesses their sin, and desires to live at peace with others.
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs." (Mark 10:14) With their parents' permission, children are also welcome to receive the sacrament. The senior pastor teaches fourth graders about communion each January.  You are welcome and invited to come in faith on the first Sunday of every month to share in this encounter with our living Lord.

2. Do you believe in infant baptism?
We concur with John Wesley and the other founders of the Methodist movement. They never wavered from their belief that infants and young children can receive baptism as a sign of their belonging to the church of Jesus Christ when their parents profess their own faith. For salvation, baptized children must still come to a personal relationship with Christ as the Holy Spirit leads.  We also respect the beliefs of those who seek baptism for themselves or their children once they have professed faith in Jesus Christ (believers baptism). As the first step toward that end, we are pleased to dedicate little ones at the wishes of their parents.

3. What are the basic Methodist beliefs?
Methodists share with many other Christians a fundamental belief that salvation is by faith alone in Jesus Christ. We also believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and is the authority on all issues of faith and how we should live our lives.  Additionally, the quest for inward and outward holiness has characterized Methodism. Our goal is to be devoted followers of Jesus Christ, "not in name only, but in heart and in life."

4. How do I become a member of this church?
When you attend worship and participate in ministries and other activities, you belong. You are a welcome part of our family. To become a member, you need to sincerely make a significant commitment.
Members make a public affirmation of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, faithfully commit to the bible, and hold to the core foundational beliefs of Christianity. In addition, members pledge loyalty to the church by supporting it with prayer, regular attendance, giving, and service.
We also like everyone to attend the 8-week Foundations Class to help decide about your place here. The class is required for those who seek membership at New Hanover United Methodist Church.
